‘You’re bloody insane!’ Owain said, not for the first time.

Bill looked at him. There was a glint in his eyes that Owain had not seen before, like he’d got a real buzz out of jumping from the lighthouse. Not that it was a jump, as it happened, but the intention had been there. For his own part Owain had simply run down the steps and met Bill back outside.

‘What harm was there?’ Bill asked. ‘After all, we’re not here in any way that counts, as you pointed out in the first place, remember? We’re still in the lighthouse in ’69. Nothing we do here will affect that.’

‘How do we know?’

Bill shrugged. ‘This isn’t like stepping on sea gull wings. We can’t affect anything in the past. Nothing we do will change the future.’

‘Stepping on sea gull wings?’

‘Yeah. The Deterministic Non-periodic Flow?’ Owain was clearly none the wiser. Bill explained further. ‘The idea that one flap of a sea gull’s wings could be enough to alter the course of the weather forever. Apply that to time travel, like in Bradbury’s A Sound of Thunder; what if we broke the wing of a sea gull in the past…’

‘And the flight of the sea gull was important for some weather conditions in the future?’ Owain said, and nodded. ‘Like a hurricane or something.’

‘Right, a hurricane that may kill someone who was supposed to die. A fireman who was supposed to save hundreds of people, for instance. But if we change that…’

Bill waited for Owain to catch up. The younger man was nodding slowly. ‘Where do you get all this stuff from?’

‘Books, you know. You don’t read much, do you?’

‘Nope. Give me a football magazine or the sport’s section of a newspaper and I’ll read for hours.’

Bill shook his head. ‘Mate, you need to read more. Maybe some scientific papers. Edward Lorenz could be very helpful if these are the kind of situations we’re going to get into with the colonel.’

Owain shrugged. ‘Nothing I can learn in a book that I can’t learn by travelling. Although, travelling to the past wasn’t on my…’ He stopped at a sound ahead of them. A strange slithering. Like something was sliding across the rocks.

‘Come on,’ Bill said, reaching for his gun instinctively.

Owain followed him, not bothering to point out that the gun didn’t actually exist. It was only here because it was part of Bishop’s astral image, a reflection of how he looked back in the future.

They stopped and watched the creature slink forward. Owain hadn’t seen anything quite like it before. A strange, giant jellyfish pulsating with a green luminescence. It was the Rutan he had heard about. The alien responsible for all the deaths on Fang Rock in 1902. He moved forward.

‘Owain!’ Bill hissed, his gun aimed at the Rutan.

‘It can’t see us,’ Owain reminded him, stepping closer to the alien as it continued towards the lighthouse. ‘We may as well get a good look at…’ His head snapped around. A strange noise echoed across the rocks.
